Terrorism - Public Speaking Speech

On September 11, 2001, 2 planes crashed into the World Trade Center in the heart of New York City, another crashed into the Pentagon. The collapse of the once magnificent architecture alone caused the death of more than 2600 innocent souls and shattered the peaceful living of thousands more.

Why must this tragedy happen? Why must we, the innocent civilians bear the consequence of this never-ending war? More importantly, what has the world come upon?

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Terrorism. What exactly is terrorism? Most of the people comprehend terrorism as a threat of violence and some may even relate terrorism to the Middle East countries. These perceptions are not entirely true. In fact, the history of terrorism dates back to the year 1795 during the post Revolutionary era in France, called the era of “Reign of Terror”. This proves that terrorism happens around the world.

Just now a question surfaced. What is the cause of terrorism during these years? Back in the year 1990, the United States launched an attack on Iraq in the name of liberating Kuwait. But to me the reason the Gulf War took place was because of oil. The Americans wanted oil and the Iraqi had plenty of it and so war began. In the end, America was victorious and Iraq was penetrated. 11 years later, the terrorists took revenge and tore apart the World Trade Center. They attempted this form of unconventional warfare to show their grievances, anger and dissatisfaction over their enemy. At the same time, they wished to gain the support of the people around the world by claiming that they fighting because of religion. According to philosopher Michael Walzer, terrorism is always morally wrong but at the same time those who engaged in terrorism can be morally justified in one specific case. Therefore, they used the fact that U.S. supports Israel against Palestine, to further justify their acts of terrorism, to convince fellow people of the world that they’re just defending themselves. In the end, we can say that indirectly U.S. tasted her own medicine in the 911 incident.

Indeed terrorism had brought many negative impacts on the world in whichever aspect. Hence, pragmatic measures were taken in order to counter terrorism. First, I think that it is brilliant for some countries to tighten its customs law. Strict rules and regulations are implemented in all of the countries’ ports of entry such as airports and sea ports. Let’s take Canada as an example. All visitors must apply for a visa to enter the country including visitors from the Commonwealth nations. This measure is to double check on the visitors’ identities and to further strengthen the security. Some countries also provide counter-hijacking training to the air force and airplane crews. Like in China, even air steward and stewardess are given this sort of training. As we all know, social peace of a country will be affected by terrorism. So, to return the social stability, some countries introduced the counter-terrorists organizations. We have the FBI and the SWAT force in the United States, the Special Duties Unit (SDU) in Hong Kong, and in Malaysia, government formed the Pasukan Gerak Khas as to counteract whenever there is an attack or a riot.

How effective these measures can be, they are only capable of controlling the situation after the happening of terrorism. Can it really cure the impact caused by the terrorists? What about the damage caused? The lives taken? And the trauma in the heart of every citizens? The world has become the political playground for the terrorists, and in this state, this mud war between the greedy and the evil is simply never-ending. If the war is to continue, we the innocent people will only be the victims and suffer endlessly. Terrorism is simply a despicable act against humanity and human rights. I totally reject terrorism and hoped for world peace. What about you, my friends? Have you played your parts?

The innocent me three years ago

Disclaimer: Please note that this piece required for admission by OSU was written by a naive boy who had only one and a half years of college education. Three years ago, he was still very innocent. So please abstain from cursing.


As the world is stepping into the realm of modernization and globalization, Confucianism being one of the oldest philosophies still marks strong influence in many countries in East Asia especially in China. Through centuries, the teachings of the founder, Confucius, continued its vast influence to the Chinese people and is greatly practiced in the administration of the Chinese government. Many have thought that Confucianism is a religious belief. The perception is not very true. In fact, it is a form of ethical system which focuses on human morality and right actions.

The central theme of Confucianism is that of relationships between the people of different status and ranks. Individuals are in different position of relationship with different people, for instance, as children in relation to their parents, and as seniors in relation to their juniors. In Confucianism, seniors or teachers are considered to be respectful and to be revered by the pupils. Try to imagine the situation as there is even an ancient Chinese saying stating that the teacher for a day is as noble as the lifetime parent. In vice versa, seniors also have duties of benevolence and concern toward juniors. This theme consistently manifests itself in the Chinese culture even to this day.

In this very moment, wars are taking place throughout the world. Terrorism is simply the most fearful thing that could happen to one country. All of these violence and bloodshed are the result of poor human relationships. Hence, in this context, the concept of harmonious relations emphasized in Confucianism coherently bears the key to help ease these problems.

As I mentioned, Confucianism speaks the role of seniors towards juniors. In the same sense, it can be applied into the administration of every nation. Country leaders need to show kindness and compassion towards the people. Attention has to be given to the needs and grievances of the people, so that strategies could be lay out and actions could be taken. The leader’s deep solicitude towards the people’s welfare will result in happiness and contentment. The value in Confucianism is also capable to put a stop to the wars happening now throughout the every corner of the world. World leaders need to realize the importance of respect among nations. In addition, developed countries could give assistance to the developing ones in forms of wealth and technology. Also, humanity aid could be given to countries suffered from natural disasters and catastrophes.

By practicing Confucianism, wars and bloodsheds could be avoided. The misery of those living in jeopardy and suffering could be relieved just by a thought of kindness by the world leaders. Who knows that there will be a day the war in the West Banks finally come to an end? Barack Obama can be the President of U.S.A, anything is possible if we just value the relationships among human beings and between countries.

Balance is the key, but first, set the standards.

Given how the United States is recognized as a nation having one of the most stringent regulatory and standard agencies in the eyes of the world, people would doubt the success of these governmental agencies such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in putting out the rage of millions of Americans, which those include organic farmers or social activists.

The pro-organic community had been worried and concerned about the validity of organic the ‘Certified Organic’ labels issued by the National Organic Program (NOP) of the USDA. While it is very pleasing to see that organic farmers are subsidized, meaning that the government is actually encouraging the growth of organic farming, the ‘license’ to farm organically is just being given to farmers, way to leniently.

The sad truth is that the probability that the integrity of organic food will be compromised is just too high, either a possible pollen drift from a genetically-modified organism (GMO) or the fact that giants like Wal-mart getting a share in the organic food market. Thus, the NOP should consider reestablishing or strengthening the regulations for maintaining the standards of organic farms and organically grown crops. It can begin from the location of the farm. Besides soil quality, farms should only be granted certification if the location is of a certain distance away from any urban developments or conventional farming operations. Taking a drastic step further, the NOP could even make specifications and restrictions on the location of organic farms. For instance, organic farms must be contained in valleys to prevent any pesticides and GMOs ‘contamination’.

There are also voices that call for the inclusion of GMOs into the definition of organic food. Just because that Bt toxins are sprayed on organic crops, does that mean that GMOs should be allowed to enter the organic framework? All should realize by now that while Bt pesticides are applied on organic crops, GMOs containing the Bt gene are constantly producing these insecticidal toxins. Bt crops are not synonymous to applications of Bt toxins manually due to that application of the toxins can be manipulated besides that the toxins readily break down in less than a week, and the applications are very minimal in the case of organic farming.

Advocating organic farming does not imply a rejection of conventional farming. Let’s be realistic and admit the fact that the production of organic food is very labor-intensive and would not be sufficient to feed the entire American population, if not the world. Therefore the equilibrium point between conventional and organic farming is needed. While conventional farms are feeding the people, organic farms are there to offset the possible health and environmental impacts, apart from providing the ideal food items for those health conscious people who can afford purchasing organic foods.
